This is EMAS (Engineered materials arrestor system) at the end of runway 22L (there is another one at the other end of 22L which is same runway 4R). EMAS is supposed to slow down and eventually stop an airplane that cannot stop under it's own power. Some may see this and be shocked that this goes on but rest assured, this is completely normal and both aircraft are TCAS equipped (Terminal Collision Avoidance System). TCAS is a screen in the cockpit that shows other airplanes that are within the subject aircraft's airspace. The TCAS picks up other airplanes via their transponder which every airliner has on board. In addition to TCAS, ATC is also monitoring traffic, which is especially heavy over central Europe

Maho Beach in Saint Martin has always drawn people to it because of the airplanes over the beach, but it is now at the point that during peak winter season you can barely see beach anymore, just people. Good for business for the island I guess but that little beach can only take on so many people, it's relatively small. These folks are about to watch the Air France A340 come over the beach
