NCE has a very, very irritating noice making machine on the field to make the birds go away. Note that the airport is right on the Mediterranean and does attract heavy bird activity so pilots are very cognizant of the issue when flying into and out of NCE

The reason for the salute was an American Airlines ground ops employee's passing in a car accident (his remains are onboard).
