a340_EMB145_0909b.jpgTiming is everything! Lufthansa A340 flies over an Embraer 145. Some may see this and be shocked that this goes on but rest assured, this is completely normal and both aircraft are TCAS equipped (Terminal Collision Avoidance System). TCAS is a screen in the cockpit that shows other airplanes that are within the subject aircraft's airspace. The TCAS picks up other airplanes via their transponder which every airliner has on board. In addition to TCAS, ATC is also monitoring traffic, which is especially heavy over central Europe

egypt76SU-GAOoct90.jpgEgyptair 763 seen holding on taxiway Lima Alpha as Avensa 737 is taxiing on Bravo enroute to 31L for departure, followed by Kalitta DC8. Sadly, Egyptair lost both their 767's (SU-GAO is seen here and SU-GAP was crashed into the ocean near Nantucket after departure out of JFK November 1999). SU-GAO arrived in Harare, Zimbabwe during a thunderstorm with heavy rain and high winds. Shortly before touchdown, the aircraft's right engine struck the runway, taking the engine off the wing and causing the plane to run off the runway. There were no fatalities but the airplane was a write-off. The interesting thing is that both airplanes were mechanically perfect when they were written off..

HOLDSHORTBAR-LIGHTS-RWY_LAX_0208B.jpgThis photo is part of an extensive collection of airport signage and navaids that i'll be sharing with you. The double solid double broken lines you see are runway hold short bars. Pilots taxiing know that when they approach these lines, they are about to enter a runway. If it is an active runway (meaning currently in use), the pilot had better get ATC clearance to enter that runway or risk runway incursion which unfortunately does happen numerous times every year at many airports. Seen here is runway 25R on the south side of LAX and Delta Connection EMB145 on takeoff roll

ati730plmar01.jpgCREW ON BOARD SURVIVED. Actual takeoff weight was 342,000lbs. 242,000lbs was the takeoff weight calculated, this is the result. Flight routing was JFK-BRU. I arrived on the site a couple of hours after the crash and PAPD/FDNY were still putting out the smoldering cargo inside. Luckily 3 crewmembers and 2 pax survived. More photos of the site to come in the future. My friend Dave Kaufman actually witnessed this aborted takeoff from the control tower, perhaps he can add more in the comments section.
