AIRFRANCE_A340-300_F-GLZK_SXM_0114_JP_small.jpgI typically do not post people-only shots on the web site but this one is an exception. Maho Beach in Saint Martin has always drawn people to it because of the airplanes over the beach, but it is now at the point that during peak winter season you can barely see beach anymore, just people. Good for business for the island I guess but that little beach can only take on so many people, it's relatively small. These folks are about to watch the Air France A340 come over the beach

AERLINGUS_747-100_EI-ASI_JFK_0910_JP_small.jpgIt's hard to describe the love I have for these photos. This photo, taken 22 years ago was on cheap Ektachrome slide film, developed at the local drug store. I was able to restore it to its full glory after massive color correction, scratch and dirt removal- lots of work but well worth it. This beautiful Aer Lingus 747-100 just touched down on runway 31R and went long, to the delight of this photographer (most airplanes turn off earlier and this type of photo is not possible)

It was photographed on Ektachrome slide film and processed at the local drug store, but held up well for 22 years, even with lots of dust and scratches that I cleaned up. 9 years after I photographed F-GPAN, it had a pretty nasty end-of-life experience in Chennai, India. AIRFRANC_747-400_INTLAIRSPACE_1011small.jpgFirst time ever getting this kind of photo in U.S. airspace (you are more likely to see this over busy European airspace). I'm in a Jetblue E190 flying BOS-CLT and from my left side window seat, I saw this 747 from a distance on the right side window, so luckily the next row over was empty so I grabbed the camera and as the AF 747 got closer I snapped away. Most came out unsharp (typical through airplane windows with zoom lens), but this was good enough to share. We were on Southerly track south of New York.. -if you know where it was headed please put in comments below

AEROGAL_A320_HC-CJW_JFK_0911B_JP.jpgThis was a huge surprise for me at JFK. I shot this airplane in Quito back in February of this year and did not think I'd ever see it in NY. Typical equipment used is 767-300 or 757-200, I guess A320's also now..

UPDATE: I am told by my friends in Quito that the 767 is down for maintenance for perhaps up to a month, hence the A320's being used to JFK

CRW_0445_JP.jpg
CRW_0445_JP.jpgOut of respect for the airline, I did not include certain information, but as clearly seen, pilots who taxi airplanes with a cargo loader clearly in the path of the airplane in the gate area will witness something like this- one of the A340's engines went right over the loader, crushed the top extension where the operator stands, and caused significant engine exterior damage as seen in photo. No injuries luckily. Ironically, look at the top left of the engine cowling: NO PEOPLE nearby- no equipment either!

ANTONOV-AIRLINES_AN225_CLT_0610Bjpavnet.jpgI missed the landing but did get it taxiing by with part of Charlotte's skyline in the background. The Antonov 225 is the largest airplane in the world and is typically sent on missions that other airplanes cannot handle, such as moving oversized and extremely heavy industrial equipment from one part of the world to another

ual777JAN06jfk.jpg
ual777JAN06jfk.jpgUnited 777-200's have Pratt & Whitney engines, which are large, but if you look at a 777 with the GE90 engines, there is a huge difference in size (I believe the GE90's are basically as large as the fuselage of a Boeing narrowbody such as the 737
tspan752_n751pa_12_02.jpg
tspan752_n751pa_12_02.jpgNo question about it, some of the finest airliner photos are typically taken when the sun is out just after a large snow event

CONTINENTAL_737-700_UIO_1209jp.jpgYou can't tell by looking at the photo but this Continental 737's takeoff roll was especially long. It is rotating where most heavies typically lift thier front gear!
qantas_A380_LAX_1109joepries.jpg
qantas_A380_LAX_1109joepries.jpgQantas A380's, like thier 747-400 counterparts typically come in to LAX in the morning and are then brought to the remotes for the day until evening move back to the gates for departure (the only exception is the JFK flight performed by 747-400, which departs in the morning hours and returns to LAX in the evening). Seen here is VH-OQB resting on the hardstand as sunlight has almost completely disappeared

varigmd11PP-VPJlax1204.jpg
varigmd11PP-VPJlax1204.jpgTypically, aircraft landing on the north side of LAX use 24R, however, when there is no takeoff traffic on 24L (as seen with this Varig MD11), ATC will transition landing traffic to 24L to avoid having to land and hold short (LAHSO is the acronym used by the FAA) 24L plus save some taxi time & fuel consumption
4R_jfk_0703.jpg
4R_jfk_0703.jpgILS (instrument landing system) Runway 4R (not in service when photo was taken) is typically used in poor weather conditions at JFK, it is CATIII (precision instrument approach), which is the highest category for a runway and means that aircraft that are equipped with the proper equipment can land in zero/zero visibility. If you have any other information to add, please do so in the comment section of this photo

egypt76SU-GAOoct90.jpgEgyptair 763 seen holding on taxiway Lima Alpha as Avensa 737 is taxiing on Bravo enroute to 31L for departure, followed by Kalitta DC8. Sadly, Egyptair lost both their 767's (SU-GAO is seen here and SU-GAP was crashed into the ocean near Nantucket after departure out of JFK November 1999). SU-GAO arrived in Harare, Zimbabwe during a thunderstorm with heavy rain and high winds. Shortly before touchdown, the aircraft's right engine struck the runway, taking the engine off the wing and causing the plane to run off the runway. There were no fatalities but the airplane was a write-off. The interesting thing is that both airplanes were mechanically perfect when they were written off..

AIRCANADA-JETZ_A320_C-GQCA_FLL_02_04.jpgAir Canada jetz typically transports Canadian sports teams to sporting events all over the U.S. and Canada. I typically do not shoot airplanes during high sun unless they are out of the ordinary (such as this airplane)

ati730plmar01.jpg
ati730plmar01.jpgCREW ON BOARD SURVIVED. Actual takeoff weight was 342,000lbs. 242,000lbs was the takeoff weight calculated, this is the result. Flight routing was JFK-BRU. I arrived on the site a couple of hours after the crash and PAPD/FDNY were still putting out the smoldering cargo inside. Luckily 3 crewmembers and 2 pax survived. More photos of the site to come in the future. My friend Dave Kaufman actually witnessed this aborted takeoff from the control tower, perhaps he can add more in the comments section.

fbvfb_may99.jpg
fbvfb_may99.jpgThis may seem like just another window shot but it's not. That window, while hard to tell from the photo is a tiny window in F-BVFB, Air France Concorde. With my friend Joe Wolf who worked for Northwest at the time, I flew F-BVFB from JFK to Detroit (yes, I said Detroit). What's really special about this particular shot however as our ATC and PA friends at JFK will tell you, a 4L Concorde departure is extremely rare. Typically the Concorde departures would utilize 31L/13R or 22R, primarily for noise abatement.

a330cockpit21.jpgWhat a magical time for an aviation aficionado. Sitting jumpseat with two great guys (both ex-Sabena), watching the sun rise from the East (before blinding us as the flight crews crossing the pond regularly know all too well!), as we cross the Atlantic at flight level 410.
