USAIRWAYS_A320_N106US_CLT_1008B_JP_small1.jpgPhotographed about 12 weeks before flight 1549 went into the Hudson (everyone survived thanks to Captain Sully). If it wasn't for the birds the airplane encountered on departure from La Guardia, it would have made a routine landing in Charlotte as pictured here

AIRFRANCECARGO_747-200F_F-GPAN_JFK_1090B_TAKE1_jP_small.jpgThis 747 had a very unfortunate crash landing with no gear in Chennai India 9 years after I took this shot. Fortunately the crew survived but the airplane burned and was a total writeoff. This is a photo of how it ended up on the runway: http://www.baaa-acro.com/wp-content/uploads/1999/03/B747-200-Air-France-Madras.jpg

AEROLINEASARGENTINAS_A340-300_LV-BMT_MIA_0113F_JP_small.jpgIf I could only send out a signal.... -Moments after the Aerolineas Argentinas A340 touched down and proceeded to its gate between H and J concourses, it struck the Air France 777-300 (the A340 took west taxi-lane instead of center, which is the required taxi-lane to avoid a collision). I wasn't even fully aware of what happened until I noticed that the airplane was not moving behind the Air France 777 and all the flashing lights were around

UNITED_767-200_N612UA_JFK_0594_TAKE1_JP_small.jpgA very special photo in my collection. United 767-200 taxies on taxiway Zulu before turning on to runway 31L for departure to Los Angeles. N612UA was the second 767 to hit the World Trade Center on 9/11. Today news came out that part of its landing gear was found in-between two buildings near ground zero. This airplane was built in 1968. I took this photo in January 1997, and it unfortunately suffered a terrible crash in Miami just 7 months later...

ELALCARGO_747-200F_4X-AXG_JFK_0491_MAIN_small.jpgSad memories. When I worked for El Al Cargo in the early 90's, I used to go on board 4X-AXG many times. This was El Al Cargo's only true freighter (meaning it was born in the factory as a cargo plane, it was not a converted passenger plane). Sadly, -AXG was lost in a fiery crash in Amsterdam just months after this photo was taken...

TOWERAIR_747-100_N605FF_JFK_1295_JP_small.jpg
TOWERAIR_747-100_N605FF_JFK_1295_JP_small.jpgNot a good morning for Tower Air. The 747 commenced takeoff on runway 4L and veered off the runway, hit a transformer and this is the result. As I'm taking this picture, you can see that they are in the middle of whiting out the Tower Air titles on the fuselage. Sorry for the poor quality, I was quite a distance away
DANAAIR_MD80_N944AS_MIA_0109B_JP_small.jpg
DANAAIR_MD80_N944AS_MIA_0109B_JP_small.jpgSadly, this airplane went down in Lagos, Nigeria. I photographed it before delivery to the airline in January 2009. It was previously owned by Alaska Airlines. May the victims rest in peace

IFLGROUP_CONVAIR440_N171FL_MIA_0510_JP_small.jpgN171FL had an unfortunate accident in Guatemala City (May 2012), which will probably forever ground this great old airplane. I believe the crew was not injured as the nose gear collapsed and the left propeller penetrated the fuselage

GULFSTREAM_N823GA_TLV_0212_JP_small.jpgAmazingly, there are photos of this airplane literally all over the world- Australia, Europe, USA, Middle East, Caribbean. She sure does get around...

A380-ENGINE-DAMAGE_JFK_0111_JP_small.jpg
A380-ENGINE-DAMAGE_JFK_0111_JP_small.jpgOut of respect, I will not mention the airline. This is what happens to an A380 cowling that gets hit by a baggage loader (note that it happened while aircraft was at the gate, this is the cowling removed and prepared for repair)

CRW_0445_JP.jpg
CRW_0445_JP.jpgOut of respect for the airline, I did not include certain information, but as clearly seen, pilots who taxi airplanes with a cargo loader clearly in the path of the airplane in the gate area will witness something like this- one of the A340's engines went right over the loader, crushed the top extension where the operator stands, and caused significant engine exterior damage as seen in photo. No injuries luckily. Ironically, look at the top left of the engine cowling: NO PEOPLE nearby- no equipment either!

twan93119feb01.jpg
twan93119feb01.jpgI share this photo with a heavy heart. N93119 operated TWA flight 800, seen here on a cold February morning (registration not visible but a/c identification number 17119 seen above nosewheel door). This particular loss has always been the most painful for me, as I'm sure many of my friends at JFK and TWA would concur. May the victims of Flight 800 rest in peace...

egypt76SU-GAOoct90.jpg
egypt76SU-GAOoct90.jpgEgyptair 763 seen holding on taxiway Lima Alpha as Avensa 737 is taxiing on Bravo enroute to 31L for departure, followed by Kalitta DC8. Sadly, Egyptair lost both their 767's (SU-GAO is seen here and SU-GAP was crashed into the ocean near Nantucket after departure out of JFK November 1999). SU-GAO arrived in Harare, Zimbabwe during a thunderstorm with heavy rain and high winds. Shortly before touchdown, the aircraft's right engine struck the runway, taking the engine off the wing and causing the plane to run off the runway. There were no fatalities but the airplane was a write-off. The interesting thing is that both airplanes were mechanically perfect when they were written off..
n53116dec94.jpg
n53116dec94.jpgIt's hard to tell until you see the large photo. I watched this TWA 747 land 31R, turned left taxiway Victor and all of a sudden it tipped on its left side. At first I had to take another look because I could not believe what just happened! Apparently the left main gear collapsed. Better on taxiway off the runway than when making contact on landing that's for sure!
ati730plmar01.jpg
ati730plmar01.jpgCREW ON BOARD SURVIVED. Actual takeoff weight was 342,000lbs. 242,000lbs was the takeoff weight calculated, this is the result. Flight routing was JFK-BRU. I arrived on the site a couple of hours after the crash and PAPD/FDNY were still putting out the smoldering cargo inside. Luckily 3 crewmembers and 2 pax survived. More photos of the site to come in the future. My friend Dave Kaufman actually witnessed this aborted takeoff from the control tower, perhaps he can add more in the comments section.

aa757ewr9112005.jpgPhotographed at around the same time and exactly 4 years after the tragic events of 9/11/01. This is the gate in EWR which was used to board United flight 93 (757-200) which went down in Shanksville Pennsylvania. Note the flags are appropriately at half staff. God bless all the victims and familes of victims of 9/11

1994jpcolga.jpg
1994jpcolga.jpgThis photo was taken inside one of American Airlines' maintenance hangars in LaGuardia. The MD80 was brought in there for post-crash investigation and as is usually done after an accident, hide it from the passengers flying into and out of the airport. When I walked inside the airplane, about half way down the fuselage I felt a hump under my feet, that is where the fuselage buckled as the airplane ran off the end of the runway (I believe it was runway 31?), coming to rest on a dike. There were no fatalities luckily. For those that know me these days, obviously I don't wear my hair like that anymore haha
